Killarney in October: What's On, What's Open

Ask anyone who lives here which month they would choose, and very few of them say July.

October is the one locals keep to themselves. The National Park turns through the middle of the month. The Ring of Kerry empties out enough that you can actually stop the car where you want to. And the town settles back into itself — you can get a table for dinner without ringing three days ahead, and hear music in a pub without standing in the doorway.

Here is what to expect, and what is worth planning around.

The National Park is the reason to come

Killarney National Park was given to the nation in 1932, the first national park in Ireland. It now runs to more than 25,000 acres of ancient oak woodland, three lakes and mountain, and it has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1981.

In October it does something it does not do the rest of the year. The oak and birch turn through copper and gold, the light comes in low and sideways through the trees, and the crowds that fill the car parks in August are simply not there.

Three things worth walking to, none of them difficult:

  • Torc Waterfall — about five minutes from the car park on a good path. The best return on effort anywhere in Kerry, and it runs hardest after autumn rain.

  • Muckross House and gardens — walk it or hire a bike rather than driving. The lake path is flat and beautiful in autumn.

  • Ross Castle — on the shore of Lough Leane, and a short drive from town.

The red deer are rutting

This is the part most visitors miss entirely.

Killarney holds Ireland's only remaining wild herd of native red deer, and October is the rut. The stags roar — a sound that carries a surprising distance across open ground and is genuinely startling the first time you hear it — and they spar over the hinds.

Early morning and the hour before dusk are when you are most likely to see and hear it, in the open ground around Muckross and the Knockreer estate.

Keep your distance and stay on the paths. These are wild animals in the middle of the one month of the year when they are least interested in people.

What's on in October 2026

Killarney Racecourse, October Festival — Sunday 4 and Monday 5 October. The two-day autumn finale that closes the racing season. A good excuse for a weekend early in the month.

The Gleneagle INEC Arena has one of its busiest stretches of the year in late October:

Date

Event

Sunday 18 October

Coldplace

Friday 23 October

Abbaesque · Bingo Loco · Mike Wozniak

Saturday 24 October

Seeger Sessions Revival

Sunday 25 October

The Hothouse Flowers · The Year Grunge Broke · David James Dance

Monday 26 October

The 2 Johnnies (over 18s)

Tuesday 27 October

Check gleneaglearena.ie for tickets and the full programme — the complex also runs country and dance nights most evenings alongside the arena shows.

The bank holiday and midterm week

Late October is the busiest stretch of the month, and it is worth understanding why before you try to book anything.

Three things land at once:

  • The October bank holiday falls on Monday 26 October.

  • The school midterm break runs Monday 26 to Friday 30 October, with schools closing on the afternoon of Friday 23 October and reopening on Monday 2 November.

  • Halloween falls on a Saturday this year — 31 October — at the end of that week.

So from Friday 23 October the town is busy, restaurants fill, and accommodation gets tight. If you are coming for any of it, book earlier than you think you need to.

The flip side: the first three weeks of the month are quiet, the weather is often no different, and the park looks the same. If you have any flexibility at all, come between the 6th and the 20th.

Practical things worth knowing

The clocks go back on Sunday 25 October. It catches people out every year. From that weekend it gets dark noticeably earlier, so move your walks and your drive round the Ring into the morning.

It will rain at some point. This is Kerry in autumn — mild, green and changeable, which is exactly why it looks the way it does. Bring a proper jacket and boots that do not mind a wet path, and you will barely notice. Killarney has more than enough to do on a wet afternoon.

Driving the Ring of Kerry is easier in October, but the daylight is shorter. Leave early — before eight if you can — and you will have the first few stops to yourself and still be back for dinner. It is 179km and it deserves a full day, not a rushed four hours.

Most things are still open. October is the tail of the season rather than the off-season. Muckross House, the jaunting cars, the boat trips and the main attractions are all still running, though some reduce their hours from mid-month. Worth a phone call for anything specific.

Dingle and the Gap of Dunloe are both comfortable day trips, and both are better without summer traffic.

Where to stay

A word on our own bias, since this is our blog.

We are a family-run 4-star guesthouse on the Tralee Road, 2.4km from the town and on the edge of the National Park — close enough to walk into town for dinner, far enough to hear nothing but the garden. Seventeen rooms, five sitting rooms, and an award-winning breakfast made to order in the morning.

Two things that matter more in October than they do in July: breakfast is included, and parking is free on site. If you are coming for a gig at the INEC or over the bank holiday weekend, the parking alone is worth the four-minute drive out of town — we have written more about staying near the INEC here.

One night or two, whichever suits. Booking direct with us is always our best rate, and if you find our rooms cheaper anywhere else, tell us and we will match it.
